The Bibliothèque du Roi was founded at the Louvre Palace by Charles V (‘Charles le Sage’) in 1368. Francis I transferred the collection to Fontainebleau in 1534. Under librarianship of Amyot (1513-1593) the collection was conveyed to Paris. Under the librarian Auguste de Thou this library had the largest collection of books in the world. The library grew steadily under Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The collections also increased by purchase and gifts. During the French Revolution the Bibliothèque was in great danger but suffered no damage. In 1792 The Assembly declared the Bibliothèque du Roi to be national property and it was renamed Bibliothèque Nationale.
