Uber den Künstler

Claes Jacobsz van der Heck (ca. 1578-1652) is known as the ‘master of Alkmaar’. The earliest works attributed to him date back to 1608, but Karel van Mander already mentioned him in his Schilderboeck in 1604, referring to him as an ‘excellent landscapist’. Aside from his grand and detailed landscapes in the style of his Flemish predecessors, he also designed and created coats of arms, guild-banners and even gables. Such a versatile production was common for seventeenth century artists and sustained by a very efficient workshop practice. A large exhibition of his work, following this workshop practice, was held in the Stedelijk Museum of Alkmaar in 2015.
