Uber den Künstler

Eugène Louis Boudin was a French painter who was born in Honfleur on 12 July 1824, he died in Deauville on 8 August 1898. He was one of the first French landscape painters who painted in the open air. Inspired by the French landscape artist Jean-François Millet, Boudin studied briefly in Paris. There, he became enchanted by the paintings of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Back on the Atlantic coast in 1853, Boudin started to paint the sea. In about 1856 Boudin met Claude-Oscar Monet and introduced him to outdoor painting.

The two worked together in the later 1860s. While he exhibited with the Impressionists in 1874, it turned out he was not an innovator and from 1875 onwards his work was shown at the official Salon. He was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1892. The majority of his paintings are small landscapes of the harbours and beaches of the coast of northern France.
