George Martens (1894, Groningen – 1979, Groningen) was a Dutch expressionist painter, aquarellist, draughtsman and etcher. He was taught to paint by his father Gijsbert Martens. He studied at the Akademie Minerva in his birthplace. His subjects are among others figures, portraits, cityscapes, marines and nudes. He lived and worked in Groningen. In 1918, Martens was a co-founder of the art movement De Ploeg (The Plough). His first presentation - along with the other members of De Ploeg - was in 1919. In 1922, he married Ali Pott. In 1963, Martens was Chairman of De Ploeg. In 1976, he made a study tour to North- and South America. Before and after World War II he participated in numerous exhibitions of De Ploeg.
