Jan van Bronckhorst (1494, Nijmegen - 1570, Cologne), also called Johannes Noviomagus (‘Johannes from Nijmegen’), was a pupil of the Broeders des Gemeenen Levens (Brothers of Common Life) in that city. In 1539 he was appointed a professor of philosophy in Cologne. He studied at Rostock, where he became, probably in 1542, magister artium. From 1543 to 1544 he was rector and in 1544 he became dean of the faculty of philosophy in Rostock. In 1546 he became rector of the famous Latin School at Deventer. Two years later, in 1548, he married Clara Coster. In 1569 he fled from Alva to Cologne. He wrote many works on educational, philosophical and historical subject matters in Latin.
