Jan van Huchtenburg was born in 1646, Haarlem, the Netherlands. His father passed away at young age, his brother was a student of Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem. In 1667 both brothers found themselves in Paris and Jan started working in the Manufacture de Gobelins with Charles Lebrun and Adam Frans van der Meulen.

In 1670 Jan returned to Haarlem, where he married Elisabeth Mommes. In 1681 he worked in Amsterdam for a brief period, where he essisted Gerrit Berckheyde in the depiction of figures and horses. In 1709 he was employed by prince Eugenius of Savoye, and he travelled to the battlefields with him, which he later was commissioned to depict. Van Huchtenburg passed away in Amsterdam, 1733.
