John Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England in 1863.
Atkinson is well known as a painter in oil, tempera and watercolour. His focus is primarily on animal and landscape paintings, but also as an engraver and illustrator.
Atkinson's artistic origin began when he was educated at the School of Art in Newcastle.
It is even said that he swiftly flew under the wings of Wilson Hepple in Newcastle.

The year 1900 marked the beginning of his professional artistic engagement, he decided to devote himself as a full time professional artist after several exhibitions at the Berwick Club in Newcastle.
Atkinson moved to Glaisdale and stayed there until right before the First World War.
During these years, Atkinson worked in the Netherlands on his art work.
It was not until 1914 that he returned to Newcastle to set up a studio there and engaged himself in his art there for the ten years leading up to his death.
John Atkinson was buried in the Saltwell Cemetery in Gateshead in 1924.
His works have been displayed numerously throughout his career, it includes the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, and many more.
