Uber den Künstler

Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) was the son of artist Hugo Jacobsz of Leiden. He was an apprentice pupil of his father, and later he studied under the painter Cornelis Engebrechtsz. Van Leyden’s development as an artist was fast and he soon became a successful painter and engraver.

After meeting Albrecht Dürer of Germany in 1521, Van Leyden’s work became profoundly influenced by Dürer’s compositions and his use of chiaroscuro. He was also inspired by prints based on Rafael’s work. Van Leyden also made various woodcuts and etchings. He developed a very personal style, characterized by the distinctive physiognomy of his faces. He died at the age of 39 from tuberculosis.
