Miho Kajioka (1973) is a Japanese photographer who was born in Okayama. When she was 18 years old, she moved to California, studying at the San Francisco Art Institute. Initially specialized in painting, she gradually became interested in photography at this institute. In 1995 she moved to Montreal in Canada, where she studied fine arts at Concordia University. After graduating, Kajioka returned to Japan and became a journalist where she produced TV news and documentary programs. In 2011 Japan got hit by an earthquake and tsunami. Kajioka reported on this disaster in the city of Kamaishi, where more than 800 people had died. Here she spotted blooming roses beside a blasted building. The mixture of grace and ruin inspired her to make the photographic works As it is and Where did the peacocks go? Kajioka’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries around the world, among others the Getty Images Gallery in London (UK), Galerie Le Neuf in Lodève (France), Linke in Milan (Italy) and Utility Canvas in Tokyo (Japan). In 2015 she became artist in residence in Halsnøy Kloster, Halsnøy, Norway.
